BSSO Overview

Steps to Obtain the BSSO Designation

  1. Become a Professional Member of OBEC
  2. Complete the educational requirements: Have an engineering or architectural undergraduate degree and at least 2000 hours of practical experience directly related to the practice of building science OR Have an engineering or architectural diploma from a recognized college or polytechnical institute and at least 5000 hours of practical experience directly related to the practice of building science OR Have ten (10) year’s related work experience, in the opinion of the Advisory Committee, in building design, construction or maintenance.
  3. Successfully complete the following professional exams offered by the Ontario Building Envelope Council: Building Science Theory Exam, Building Envelope Systems Exam and Materials & Mechanical Systems Exam.A minimum final mark of 65% must be achieved in each of the above-noted exams. The courses in the "Building Science Certificate" Program at the University of Toronto's School of Continuing Studies can still be used to prepare for the exams, but will not be used for accreditation in this path.
