What gets architects (and others) into trouble most often? This presentation will give an overview of the findings of a recent review of past claims at Pro-Demnity Insurance, which provides errors and omissions insurance for all Ontario architects. Spoiler alert: Specialist consultants (the “usual suspects”) and water ingress are among the recurring themes.

Speakers:
Barbara Ross, M.Arch., OAA, FRAIC, The Research in Architecture Studio

Barbara was the lead researcher in the Claims Review and principal author of the Claims Experience Workbook, which was written for all architects in Ontario, and published in 2018. For the Fall 2018 issue of Pushing the Envelope, she contributed an “Architect’s Approach” article, entitle “Working Together to Keep Water in its Place”, which summarizes just a small part of the overall research findings. She is an accomplished consulting architect, author and educator.

John Hackett, B.Arch., OAA, FRAIC, Pro-Demnity Insurance Company

John has served for 15 years as VP of Risk Management at Pro-Demnity, which is a corporate member of OBEC. His observation of the “perils of practice” helped to both initiate the research and to disseminate the research findings to architects throughout Ontario. John will be on hand to answer questions.
